EDUCATION IS MORE THAN JUST THEORY

Education is certainly much more than just theory. More than theoretical understanding, it is much more a practical aspect that is the manifestation of a vast concept.  It encompasses the entire universe, rather beyond than that, if anything exists there. Its purpose is not to fill the mind of a child with loads of information but enable him to apply what he knows in order to survive in this vast bleak world. It is a process, an ongoing lifelong process that starts in the womb and ends in the tomb.

The glaring example from ‘Mahabharat’ is very much relevant in this context where Abhimanyu learnt the art of entering into the ‘Chakravyuha’ (a formation made by soldiers in a battle to trap an opponent) in his mother’s womb when his father Arjun was explaining it to her.  However, he could not learn the skill to come out of it as his mother fell asleep at that time when it was being explained to her.  Ultimately he was killed ruthlessly.

Basic or fundamental knowledge is provided by theory which builds the foundation of education but theoretical concepts are transformed into action such as problem solving, teamwork and balancing effectively the comprehensive education through real world situations, workshops and presentation etc.

It is believed, rather than it actually is the development of all sorts of practical and rational skills, a thought process that helps in the personal, social, cultural and economic growth which results in the all-round development of an individual.  It prepares one professionally to face all the challenges of life and society through real experiences at hand.  It emphasizes training of minds to think critically, reason logically and be creative rather than just swallowing and absorbing facts.

Education that a child receives in school plays a vital and crucial role in developing a sense of ethics, empathy and cooperation that is inevitable for functioning in a diverse society.  Furthermore education empowers citizens to make informed decisions, promoting social justice, economic stability, and a more prosperous and equitable world for all.  Moreover, it cultivates creativity and innovation, driving advancements across various fields.  Additionally, education promotes social cohesion by instilling values of tolerance and respect, fostering a harmonious society.

The education system in India is full of problems that make it difficult for practical based learning to bloom and grow.  The emphasis on rote learning and standardized, traditional three-hours exams do not provide opportunity to students to explore and experiment.  Outdated teaching methods, overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources further enhance the problem.

In order to resolve these issues, there is a great need to a shift towards practical-based learning in the education system.  This can be achieved by adopting more project-based learning, activities and experiential learning opportunities. To facilitate this type of learning, special training of teachers, greater investment in infrastructure and resources is need of the hour.

In conclusion, we can say that education is not just theory.  It is not just preparing for exams.  It is about preparation for life.  It gives us power, possibilities and purpose.  Let us value it, respect it and use it well for self, society, nation and the entire world.
